JUNE 2020
The ocean-sea-water plays a large part in my abstract paintings. Partly because the medium and techniques lend themselves to go in that direction. Partly because of growing up in Long Island - sailing and swimming the summers away. I hadn´t planned on a series of events that led to living on a sailboat (a 40 foot center cockpit ketch, an Allied Mistress) for a couple years with my first husband. She was called ANHINGA after a water bird that needs to dry its wings before returning to fish.
A pilot whale followed us out of Booth Bay Harbor, wild horses grazed in the water of the Outer Banks, dolphins rode our bow wave, phosphorous waves with flying fish that jumped up on our deck. Canadian geese landed in the Chesapeake one evening and then early morning with a lot of noise-rose together with just few feathers floating slowly down onto the water. We were dis-masted once, almost hit by a container ship, spent time in Florida Marineland where I drew and the staff let me play with the dolphins that they were training, did scuba diving on the reefs, listening to parrot fish nibble away at the coral, captured and found wonderful sea shells that are still with me.
Many memories but so long ago that they dim. But the sea- is always strong and a part of my paintings.
