RAZMATAZ - A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE

MARCH 2020

While in the stay-in-home/studio mode which has been extended here in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to the 30th of May - I have been going thru letters, drawings, portfolios, clippings, photos - you name it - to sort thru what I want to keep. I finally have the time to do so. At 74 years old, there is a lot of paring down to do.

I came across a commission that I did years ago. It was of a horse called RAZMATAZ in Alabama. He died and was buried on the ranch of the owner who adored him. I don´t know anything about horses except how to draw them from the photo given. Turns out that "Raz" was a Lusitano - the fighting horse of Portugal who fight with rejoneadores in the bullring. I decided to use "Raz" on silkscreens, cards and tee shirts.

That led to being invited several years ago to do a Lusitano Horse show in Jurica, Gto., Mexico. I was recovering from open heart surgery and asked the other members at our gallery, Galeria Izamal www.galeriaizamal.com to join me. We were wined and dined and the ambassador of Portugal chose this piece to take back with him. All of us had a wonderful time during the 2 day exhibition. Our friend, Alejandra danced with a Lusitano in the ring. Traditional music went into rock n´roll with the horse dancing along to the beat.

The crowd was delighted and so were we! I found these photos yesterday in a presentation book. As with most of the commissions I do - there is a story from the owners who loved them. This is one.
